An attempted armed robbery at Rawbank in Kinshasa on Thursday has once again drawn attention to the growing insecurity and the delicate conditions under which businesses operate in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The attack, which took place in broad daylight, was foiled by a swift and coordinated response from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), supported by the Military Police and the Congolese National Police (PNC).

Security forces managed to bring the situation under control without major casualties, arresting several suspects who are now under investigation.

While the authorities praised the professionalism of the response, the incident has reignited public concern over the deteriorating security climate in the capital — particularly as banks and commercial institutions become increasingly frequent targets for organized crime.

Observers say that despite government assurances, the frequency of such criminal attempts reveals the ongoing vulnerability of businesses and the broader economic environment.

For many investors and entrepreneurs, Thursday’s events serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with operating in the DRC, where weak security infrastructure and sporadic law enforcement capacity continue to threaten economic stability.

In a joint statement, the FARDC, Military Police, and PNC reaffirmed their commitment to protecting citizens and securing national institutions against all forms of criminality.

However, business leaders and civil society voices are calling for deeper reforms, stronger deterrence measures, and consistent policing to restore public confidence.

“The fact that such attacks can be planned and attempted in the heart of Kinshasa shows the scale of the challenge,” said a security analyst. “It’s not just about response — it’s about prevention and restoring a sense of safety that allows commerce to thrive.”
