Authorities in the city of Beni, North Kivu, have officially launched a digital identification campaign targeting drivers of two- and three-wheeled motorcycles, in a bid to formalize the booming motorcycle taxi sector and enhance public security.
The new initiative mandates all motorcycle taxi operators to register digitally by presenting their identification documents, membership cards, motorcycle ownership papers, and a registration fee at their respective driver association offices.
The city has set a 30-working-day deadline for compliance with the new regulation, which is now compulsory for all riders operating in Beni.
Officials say the move is intended to help track and organize the large number of motorbike taxis that have become a primary mode of transport in the city.
By digitizing the identification process, authorities hope to curb rising crime, improve road safety, and bring informal operators into a more regulated transport framework.
Local leaders have urged all motorcyclists to cooperate with the process, warning that those who fail to register within the set timeframe may face sanctions.
