Goma’s traffic police will officially begin using breathalyzer tests this Friday, October 24, 2025, to sanction drivers caught under the influence of alcohol. The announcement was made during the city’s security council meeting chaired by Mayor Julien Katembo Ndalieni, in the presence of neighborhood chiefs and police officials.

Drunk driving, often combined with speeding, remains one of the leading causes of road accidents in Goma. These reckless behaviors continue to claim lives and endanger drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

In response, city authorities have decided to introduce breathalyzer testing to identify and punish intoxicated drivers, aiming to reduce road accidents and promote responsible driving.

According to the head of the traffic police, all necessary equipment has been available for over a week, and officers have received specialized training to use it properly.

“Our teams are ready and trained to enforce this measure with professionalism and fairness,” the commander said.

The operation was initially scheduled to start earlier but was delayed to allow for the setup of an appropriate security system designed to prevent drivers from avoiding checkpoints.

“We took the time to organize ourselves to ensure the controls are effective and that no one can escape verification,” the commander added. Checkpoints will be strategically placed across the city, especially in high-traffic areas, to maximize the impact of the initiative.

This campaign is part of broader efforts by Goma’s municipality to strengthen road safety. By targeting drunk driving, the authorities hope not only to reduce accidents but also to raise awareness about responsible driving.

Public transport drivers, who play a vital role in the city’s daily mobility, are particularly urged to cooperate. “This measure is not meant to punish but to protect. It is about saving the lives of drivers, their passengers, and safeguarding their profession,” said a city representative.

Authorities emphasize that the success of this campaign depends on the cooperation of all drivers—both private and professional. Mayor Julien Katembo called for a sense of collective responsibility, urging drivers to avoid alcohol consumption before driving. Citizens are also encouraged to report any dangerous behavior observed on the roads to help reinforce police efforts.

The launch of breathalyzer testing marks a significant step forward for Goma’s road safety campaign. By directly addressing one of the main causes of traffic accidents, this measure could save many lives.

Local authorities hope that through collective responsibility and continued enforcement, Goma will become a model city for road safety in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“This Friday will mark the beginning of a new era for Goma—one of responsible driving and shared commitment to saving lives,” said the mayor.
