M23/AFC forces apprehended a senior commander of FDLR, known as Tokyo, in Kinyana, Masisi territory, on Saturday.
Tokyo, whose real name is Yoweri from Kivuye in Burera District, Northern Province of Rwanda, was detained during a military operation, according to sources with knowledge of the operation.
Tokyo is accused of leading attacks that destroyed civilian homes, collaborating with other militia leaders, including Jean-Marie of Nyatura, Tiger, and Ignace Dunia. This capture marks the second high-ranking FDLR leader detained by M23/AFC, following the arrest of Gen. Ezechiel Gakwerere, 61, a senior FDLR member.
On March 1, Gakwerere was among 15 militia fighters handed over to Rwandan authorities by M23/AFC at La Corniche One Stop Border Post in Rubavu District.
Yesterday’s operation signals ongoing efforts to disrupt FDLR activities in the conflict-ridden North Kivu region.
M23 authorities have yet to release further details on the latest capture or its broader implications for regional security.
