Corneille Nangaa has warned of a sharp deterioration in security in Uvira following the withdrawal of AFC-M23 forces, saying the area has plunged into chaos marked by widespread violence, looting, and renewed militia activity.
In a statement, Nangaa alleged that the pullout has been followed by score-settling, systematic looting of public and private property, manhunts, targeted killings, and forced displacement of civilians.
He claimed that members of the Tutsi Banyamulenge community and other groups are being specifically targeted.
He further pointed to the re-entry of Wazalendo militias into the area, saying their return has intensified insecurity and abuses against civilians, deepening fear among local populations and accelerating displacement.
Nangaa said the current situation had been predictable, adding that warnings had been issued and preventive measures proposed in advance but were ignored.
Calling for urgent international intervention, he appealed to MONUSCO, the United Nations, the African Union, and the U.S. State Department, warning that continued inaction could have lasting historical consequences.
