The UN Human Rights Council has appointed three experts to investigate human rights abuses in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The members are Arnauld Akodjenou of Benin, Maxine Marcus of Germany and the United States, and Clément Nyaletsossi Voule of Togo.

Council president Jürg Lauber announced the appointments on October 27.

They follow a February resolution on the crisis in North and South Kivu provinces.

The panel will look into violations linked to the armed conflict, including crimes against women, children and displaced people.

The DRC government has welcomed the move and promised full cooperation.
