Colonel Guillaume Eboko, a former senior officer in the operations directorate of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), has officially joined the Alliance Fleuve Congo/M23 (AFC/M23) and been appointed Commander of the Congolese Revolutionary Police Brigade.
The announcement highlighted Eboko’s decision to turn his back on what he described as a police institution “manipulated by Kinshasa, weakened by corruption and inefficiency.”
He said his defection was motivated by the failures of the Congolese state and its security forces, which he accused of oppressing and harassing ordinary citizens.
Under his new role, Eboko will lead the Congolese Revolutionary Police Brigade, a body that AFC/M23 presents as a professional and principled force, respectful of human rights, with the stated mission of restoring trust between law enforcement and the population in areas under its control.
The move adds to a growing list of senior officers who have shifted allegiance, underscoring both the fragility of Kinshasa’s hold over its security institutions and the determination of AFC/M23 to project itself as an alternative authority capable of governance.
