More than 100 people were brutally killed near Mangurejipa in Lubero territory, North Kivu, in a massacre attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), the Islamist militia notorious for its atrocities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Survivors describe the attack as “a night of horror,” with families slaughtered and entire villages left in shock.

“We ran into the forest with nothing but the clothes we were wearing,” said one displaced resident, who lost several relatives in the attack. “The army never came, and the government says nothing. It feels like we are abandoned.”

Despite the scale of the tragedy, authorities in Kinshasa have remained silent. This has sparked outrage among citizens and observers who point to what they see as selective concern, noting that while the government was quick to condemn Israel’s bombing in Doha, it has not addressed the killings of its own people.

The massacre highlights the ongoing failure of peace efforts in eastern Congo.

The administration of President Shilombo, supported by MONUSCO has long pledged to restore stability. Yet, attacks by the ADF persist not only in Lubero but across other territories such as Ituri and Beni, where dozens of similar massacres have occurred in recent years, often leaving hundreds dead. In all these cases, crimes go unpunished and unreported, deepening resentment and mistrust among affected communities.

Residents and rights groups warn that without urgent reforms, stronger protection, and real accountability, these recurring massacres will continue to devastate local populations.

For many, the Mangurejipa attack is not an isolated incident, but part of a wider pattern of violence that has come to define daily life in eastern DRC.
