Rwandan President Paul Kagame will travel to Paris on March 10 for the World Nuclear Energy Summit, but discussions on the sidelines are expected to focus heavily on the escalating situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Kagame is scheduled to meet French President Emmanuel Macron, with the security crisis in eastern Congo high on the agenda. The issue was recently discussed between Macron and Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, reflecting mounting diplomatic concern over renewed instability in the region.

Tensions between Kigali and Kinshasa remain acute, with Congo repeatedly accusing Rwanda of backing armed groups in the east — allegations Kigali denies. Kagame’s Paris visit is therefore being closely watched as part of ongoing international efforts to ease regional frictions and prevent further escalation.

While the official framework of the trip centers on nuclear energy, the Congo file is expected to dominate private talks, underscoring how security in the Great Lakes region continues to shape Rwanda’s foreign policy engagements.
