A heated controversy is shaking the Banyamulenge community following the reception, on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, of some of its members by Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye.

In a statement relayed by several community sources, Banyamulenge representatives denounce what they describe as a “betrayal” by several individuals who took part in this meeting.

Among these individuals are Manyota Jean Bosco, Ganza Daniel, Gakunzi Fred, Byabagabo Charles, Rutikanga Merewe Neza, and Ntagora Marcel. According to these sources, they are not recognized as legitimate representatives of the community.

These individuals are accused of having been manipulated by Burundian authorities, particularly for financial purposes.

The community also claims that they are currently living abroad, notably in the United States and Canada, and that they do not understand the historical and security realities faced by the Banyamulenge people in the DRC, especially in the eastern part of the country.

Furthermore, some voices within the international community maintain that the Banyamulenge continue to suffer recurring violence orchestrated by the Kinshasa regime in eastern DRC.

They notably mention drone bombings attributed to the Congolese government, with alleged support from armed groups such as the FDLR and the Wazalendo, as well as the presence of Burundian elements.

The text also recalls the Gatumba massacre, which occurred on August 13, 2004, during which thousands of Banyamulenge civilians were killed by Burundian soldiers, thus illustrating Burundi’s historical involvement in crises affecting eastern DRC.

Several regional actors today point to Burundi as one of those responsible for massacres of civilian populations in the DRC, particularly in South Kivu province.
