Papy Mantezolo, the former president of the Provincial Assembly of Kongo Central, was apprehended late Saturday night while attempting to cross into neighboring Congo-Brazzaville, authorities have confirmed.

According to preliminary reports, Mantezolo was arrested at around 11 p.m. alongside his two brothers during what officials describe as an attempt to leave the country via the Brazzaville route. Security services intervened before the group could complete the crossing.

Judicial sources indicate that Mantezolo had been wanted in connection with allegations of embezzlement of public funds.

He had reportedly failed to respond to multiple summonses issued by the Attorney General’s Office at the Court of Cassation, despite prior warnings.

The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which is part of broader efforts by Congolese authorities to pursue accountability in cases involving the mismanagement of public resources.

Officials have not yet disclosed details regarding the specific amounts allegedly embezzled or the timeline of the alleged offenses. It also remains unclear whether formal charges have been filed following his arrest.

Mantezolo is expected to be transferred to judicial authorities in Kinshasa for further questioning as the investigation continues.
