North Kivu Governor Bahati Musanga Erasto on Tuesday inspected the Muningi Ebola Treatment Center in the Nyiragongo health zone as authorities move to strengthen preparedness measures following the confirmation of an Ebola case in Goma.
The governor was accompanied by health officials and politico-military representatives from AFC/M23 during the visit to the treatment facility, where authorities ordered the urgent rehabilitation of the site to enable it to receive confirmed and suspected Ebola patients.
According to Laurence Kanyuka, Goma currently has one confirmed Ebola case, while 27 samples analyzed by the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB) tested negative.
Officials said daily epidemiological updates will now be provided as health authorities intensify monitoring and response efforts aimed at containing the spread of the virus in and around the city.
The move comes amid growing concern over the potential spread of Ebola in the densely populated eastern Democratic Republic of Congo region, where health authorities have previously battled multiple outbreaks of the deadly disease.
