A first confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) caused by the “Bundibugyo” strain has been detected in the city of Goma, according to an official statement issued by authorities in North Kivu Province.

The confirmed patient, reportedly from Bunia in neighboring Ituri Province, has already been isolated and is receiving treatment under established health protocols.

Medical teams have also launched contact tracing efforts to identify individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.

North Kivu Governor Bahati Musanga Erasto said provincial authorities, in coordination with health services and local medical structures, immediately activated emergency response mechanisms to prevent further spread of the disease, particularly in areas under AFC-M23 administration.

Authorities have reinforced preventive health measures at hospitals, entry and exit points, and densely populated areas across Goma. Surveillance and epidemiological monitoring teams remain deployed throughout the affected zones.

Residents have been urged to avoid physical contact with suspected Ebola patients, wash their hands regularly, avoid contact with bodily fluids, and promptly report any suspected symptoms to health officials.

Officials also appealed for calm and warned against spreading rumors or misinformation.

Health authorities stressed that Ebola is not airborne and spreads only through direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, contaminated materials, or infected individuals showing symptoms.

The provincial government said it remains fully mobilized to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission in the region.
