The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHOAFRO) has rapidly deployed nearly 12 tonnes of emergency medical supplies within 24 hours to strengthen the Ebola response in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

On Sunday, WHO’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Hub in Nairobi, Kenya, dispatched 4.7 tonnes of critical medical supplies and equipment to Bunia, a key city in the affected region.

The delivery was supported by airlift operations from the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

The latest shipment follows the arrival of another seven tonnes of emergency supplies in Bunia from Kinshasa on 17 May.

Alongside the supplies, 35 experts and first responders from WHO and the DRC Ministry of Health were deployed to reinforce outbreak response efforts on the ground.

Health authorities and humanitarian partners are accelerating containment measures as they work to prevent further spread of the deadly virus.

WHO said it is moving swiftly with partners to scale up lifesaving support for affected communities.

The deployment highlights growing regional and international coordination aimed at strengthening emergency preparedness, surveillance, treatment capacity, and rapid response operations in the outbreak zone.
