The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Ethiopia have signed a historic bilateral agreement that opens a new chapter in their diplomatic relations, marking the first such partnership between the two nations in over 25 years.

The accord was signed on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in Addis Ababa by the DRC’s Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, and her Ethiopian counterpart, Gedion Timothewos Hessebon.

The comprehensive agreement covers economic, technical, scientific, and cultural cooperation, aimed at fostering mutual benefit and sustainable development.

Officials from both countries hailed the deal as a major milestone in revitalizing longstanding ties that trace back to the 1960s.

Minister Wagner, who arrived in Ethiopia on Monday, May 5, for her first official bilateral visit, was received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hadera Abera. Her visit includes a series of high-level meetings with Ethiopian authorities to deepen collaboration in various strategic sectors.

As part of her diplomatic mission, Minister Wagner is also expected to meet Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, the newly elected President of the African Union Commission, underscoring the DRC’s commitment to continental integration and multilateral diplomacy.

This renewed partnership signals a turning point in regional cooperation and is expected to contribute significantly to the stability and development of both nations.
